Out of this World

I select an artwork of installation art which represent “Out of this World”. This installation art called “Field of Light” by Bruce Munro.
The first installation was at Harvey Nichols, London 2003 – Jan 2004.

This is the first Field of Light at Harvey Nichols, London.

The idea was originally conceived by him many years ago, 1992, when he first came to Australia during a trip. The red desert had an incredible feeling of energy; ideas seems to radiate from it along with the heat. The field of light installation was one idea that landed on his mind.

Some of his great and known work about the Field of Light included

His upcoming installation art was coming out at 2013 at Uluru, Australia.

“Light has always played a major part in my life and work and, therefore for me, it is a natural medium to use”. This is how his inspiration came from.

As what he has mention, I do agree of light has played a major part of our life as well. The lighting that glow in the darkness falls and bloom out thousands of dim light like a bubble. It reminds me of the movie shows named “Avatar”, which it is another planet far from our galaxy. This is what attracted me to look at the video or art at the first place.

The blooming of light and the glowing fibre optic on the floor looks very similar to the connection of everything. The first impression of what I feel is a word “Incredible” which it gives me a feeling of outside the universe; where every light bulb represent each universe, and the fibre optic represent the connection between every universe; which it also means the connection of everything.

This gives me the perspective view of me looking at the multi-universe. Most successful element in the artwork is the light. It placing an alien installation in the midst of nature, creating contrast, allows one to see the wood from the trees. Over it all, the technologies have evolved along after the first few fields, it came out fibre optic which recent years are using compare to 15 years ago. The effect of this equipment played a major effect along the fields.

The most amazing this I saw in this art was the lighting that connected to each other, fibre optic. The LED bulb cover with a clear glass sphere is send by one different color stems in a circle. The stems hold no electrical power at all, which transport the light trough the fibre optic which irradiate from the center.

To add an additional to this amazing filed of light installation to make it more interesting, I would like to add the distance of the bulb toward the ground. Different kind of height could even get a better view from further distance. Besides, if there are a bigger distance of bulbs, it has a feeling of “forest” which could bring more on a mist and mysterious feeling towards the whole land. Some tall bulb where human height can’t reach can provide a feeling of the connection of everything, where it seems so close, but unreachable, at the same time it is connected.
